Description
The Eighties TV Shop
I remember lunchtimes at school, hanging out in the local shopping precinct. Lunch would be fish and chips while standing in the rain and looking at the latest technology in the shop next door to the fish and chip shop. We didn’t have mobile phones, few of us even had colour TVs, but we could hope that one day we would be lucky enough to own that colour TV and that cool new video game console. The shop windows at lunch time were the Internet of the time, as were the magazines that adorned the shelves of the local newsagents.
It was an era when TVs could be rented by the week, the VCR was just like having a real cinema in your home, and those trendy new digital watches not only told you the time, they also told you what time it was on the other side of the world. They could even wake you up with an almost inaudible beep, or time your hundred metre run as we replicated the Olympic Games in the street. Carry on dreaming, just be back at school for the afternoon bell!
For parents, this was an era of movie rentals, home taping the weekly soap opera and being the first in the street to own a colour TV. It was aspirational and the power of eighties marketing at its best!
I hope this brings back memories of the eighties, the vibrant high streets, and the best decade ever!
Thanks for looking!
